Rocking.gr met the guitarist of the Dutch band "Within Temptation", Ruud Jolie, and managed to obtain some of the things about the band's latest project, "Black Symphony", and to discuss with him about the music industry and how it works. Ruud doesn't hesitate to answer why they aren't just another metal band with female vocals, but also tells us what he loves in Greece.

Would you like to talk about your latest release with the group, "Black Symphony"?
"Black Symphony" is our last work, released in late 2008 and is a picture of a very great live show at Ahoy Arena in Rotterdam. "Black Symphony" is a live album recorded with the help of the Metropole Orchestra, and the scene went as guests Anneke van Gierbegen (Note: ex-The Gathering, Agua De Annique) and Keith Caputo (note: Life Of Agony). "Black Symphony" released a double cd, a dvd and a blue ray.



How difficult is it to work with a woman in the group, like Sharon, who definitely wins the audience's attention? How do you feel this?
Just think of this: "You as the audience, what would you prefer: A beautiful girl or a bad guitarist?. The answer is very simple. We don't want our fans to think of us as Sharon's band, but as an integrated format, Within Temptation.

What do you think of the Greek public and the impact they have on your country's bands like Within Temptation?
The truth is that until this visit to Greece I did not know much. I was indeed very curious to see how we deal with the Greek public, which has the reputation of being very enthusiastic and energetic. Particularly impressed by the position we had in Rockwave. This showed me a lot about how Within Temptation is thought about in Greece.



How are your relations with other Dutch bands of the same genre, such as Epica and After Forever (The interview took place before the dissolution of the group)?
Most often the media are trying to show our enemies among us. This is a view with which not all agree. Journalists trying to create situations. The music of Epica and After Forever have their own characteristics that make them different from that of Within Temptation. The only thing we have in common is the use of orchestra and female vocals, but using very different materials, therefore there is nothing the same between us.

What do you say to those who consider them as part of Within Temptation a fashion and a copy of bands like Nightwish?
This is still happening? Seriously? I am surprised that this is still happening. We have been around for 12 years. Yet there are many who treat us unfairly, like a new band. Because we have female vocals does not mean that we copy others. Once we compared it with grunge bands of the period, such as Nirvana and Alice In Chains. Those who consider us to copy Nightwish I am sure you have not heard any album of us. If you hear any of our work carefully, you will understand the differences we have from other bands such as the Finns. If you do not understand, then I salute them. I'm not particularly concerned.



What kind of music are you inspired by?
I listen to many kinds of music but I love soundtracks, bands like Maiden and certainly guitarists like Hendrix, they had a great inpact on me. Later I turned to Paradise Lost, which made us what we are today. The truth is that I do not listen to any bands with female vocals. Now I listen to groups such as Pain Of Salvation, Porcupine Tree are and Opeth, which are amazing.

What's tzatziki? I know is a dish, but of what is made it?

Well I dont know the recipe but I think it's made of milk cream and vegetables or something like that.I havent ate it for about 5 years,I actually barely remeber how it looked like
If you know how beuf salad looks and tastes like,there is a slight resemblance between them

It's yoghurt, with cucumber, salt, olive oil, sometimes lemo juice. You need to make it properly for it to taste nice, don't think it's yuck

Seems really nice!
Even though I don't really like milky-creamy foods, my stomach doesn't get on well with that.
I eat cucumber, only with salt, lemon juice and sometimes with chilli-pepper.
